Did you or someone you know have polio?

This is a clinician-led health literacy education event (for those affected by polio or with post-polio, or caring for them) and clinical education (local clinicians) session.

The free essential education provided is to guide those who had polio decades ago and are now having further health changes.

Ask those in your family about their exposure to polio during epidemics here or overseas.

Post-polio is a decades-delayed post-viral condition that is experienced by about 1 in every 1000 people across Australia – many of whom may not understand or know how to manage the condition. Post-polio presents as a cluster of highly variable: chronic fatigue, asymmetric weakness/paralysis, complex pain, breathing sleeping and swallowing difficulty, and cold/heat intolerance. The sessions provided serve those who got viral symptoms or worse during any polio epidemic, and are now of an adult age. Their polio experience may have been overseas or within Australia, across any time period.

We provide relevant post-polio resources (also free) at the sessions, and use wheelchair and power wheelchair-friendly venues. The sessions run about 2.5 to 3 hours, with a short break and light refreshments.

• Monday 5th – Australind from 12 to 3 pm
• Tuesday 6th – Hammond Park from 10 am to 1 pm
• Wednesday 7th – Lakelands (Mandurah) from 9:30 am to 12 pm
• Thursday 8th – Inglewood from 12:30 to 3:30 pm
• Friday 9th – White Gum Valley from 10 am to 1 pm

We require registration of those intending to attend the session to ensure we have enough seats and resources on the day.
