Truth time, I crave a fast-food burrito from time to time. But, if you’ve never had authentic Mexican food, you should hold off your next visit to Zambreros for now.
Bonus: if you love cocktails, you can guarantee that almost all Mexican joints offer jugs so you can share them with your mates. Name a better combo than tacos and tequila!
El Grotto

Ocean views and an awesome venue, El Grotto is a north of the river bar that can’t be skipped. On the menu you won’t find huge variety, but everything that’s on there is guaranteed to be mouth-watering. If you’re sharing with friends, you can’t go past the build-your-own tacos and salsa board.
With a dozen unique tequila cocktails, a selection of local craft beers and, of course, Mexican “cervezas”. The team at El Grotto only select the finest tequilas from small, sustainable producers!

La Cholita

From the group also behind Henry Summer and Sneaky Tony’s, this Northbridge beauty is known for being home to some of the best margaritas and Mexican food in Perth.
If you’re planning on sipping on some tequila (their collection is in the hundreds), be sure to keep your belly full of chorizo quesadilla, street corn, and some of the best guacamole I’ve ever tried. Not a fan of tequila? La Cholita does an incredible sangria, and their bar is stocked with plenty of Spanish wine and Mexican beer.

La Cabaña

Right in the heart of South Freo, the vibes are turned up to the max. Filled with bright colours and lush green plants in the courtyard, it’s a must for your next trip to Freo. Run by the same folks as the popular Eat No Evil food truck, La Cabaña has a unique West Australian take on classic coastal Mexican food.
All their produce is sourced from local farmers and suppliers, and it’s evident once you try the food; absolutely delish! With another extensive beverage list, La Cabaña makes some fantastic traditional Mexican drinks in-house, and they’re non-alcoholic!
Location: 400 South Terrace, South Fremantle
Al Pastor Taqueria

You could not have a Perth’s best Mexican guide without Al Pastor. Located inside The Sunshine Harvester Works (formally The Mantle), from the team behind the famed RoyAls, you’ll find traditional Mexican street-style tacos, tequila and delicious cocktails. Al Pastor has got you covered for all your non-tequila classic cocktail needs if you aren’t as keen on agave.
If you haven’t been to The Sunshine Harvester Works yet, it’s definitely worth the trip to Freo. With live music every weekend, what could go wrong when you have tunes with your tacos?

Piggy Food Co

An honourable mention goes to Piggy Food Co. They aren’t a traditional Mexican restaurant – their cuisine is more of a blend of Mexican and American flavours, which is unique to Southern California. Pretty cool! You’ll find them serving up a combo of hot wings, loaded fries, quesadillas, burgers and tacos.
Don’t forget the 10 taps of local and international craft brews they’ve got on offer. If you swing by between 12-5pm happy hour on the weekends, you’ll score some $5 tacos. Save room for dessert; you can’t skip on their famous house-made ice cream sambos.

Donnie Taco

This unique spot is located on a basketball court. It’s pretty simple. Pop in and have a coffee, shoot some hoops, chow down on some tacos. Their tacos are delicious and well-priced, and their nachos will definitely fill you up after working up a sweat on the court.
