MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical premiered last night at Crown Theatre, and the atmosphere was electric.
The buzz and excitement was palpable as every Michael fan was glammed up in the many faces of Michael. Ilario Grant played the lead role of MJ and embodied the human nature and the smooth criminal moves of the King of Pop with grace and commitment.

The story centers around the lead up to Michael’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. An MTV interview sparks memories that take us into Michael’s past. Flashbacks that took us to his difficult relationship with his father, played by Derrick Davis and a heartfelt moment as a child with his mother, played by Josslyn Afoa. The use of his classic hits, reimagined in a different context, added another layer to the iconic tracks and can get you right in the feels!
It’s fun and exhilarating as you are both so involved with the story but then recognise your favourite song.
The stage design is clever and versatile, with quick transitions between rehearsal room, bedroom, lounge rooms and concerts, from all different time lines of Michael’s life. The lighting, even the one single spot light created the kind of tension you would have recognised from a classic Michael performance.
As we move through his flashbacks, in no particular order, we get to see some of those iconic ‘Jackson 5’ costumes from the 60s and 70s, and from his music videos, that bring the performers to life. As you can imagine, the dance is one of the show’s strongest elements. An impeccably fit and talented chorus, with dancers that were high-energy, versatile across all styles with perfect timing and precision. The vocals were strong and smooth, from all cast members. Characters who played Michael, at different times of his life, deliver his high notes and falsetto while the ensemble deliver solid harmonies.
What I enjoyed about MJ The Musical, is that it didn’t hide from the controversy that surrounded Michael’s career and personal life. Unlike the movie, it leaned into those awkward moments all while keeping the pace, and keeping the energy consistently high. It ran like a concert and biopic at the same time, highlighting Michael’s genius, but also his values and personal mission – but not without his struggles. Those that revere him as the King of Pop will be able to see the normal human behind the mask.
I am already booking another ticket to watch this again. A definite 5 stars for me!
MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical is showing at Crown Theatre until 19th July.
