May I Speak With the Enemy is a poignant and bittersweet tragicomedy directed and co-written by Alexis Morantes in 2024. It is based on true events during the Spanish Civil War as experienced by Miguel Gila, who went on to pioneer stand-up comedy in Spain, and whose monologue on the war was performed for over 50 years, making it the longest running stand up performance in history. The film has received numerous accolades, winning 3 Carmen Awards and multiple nominations.
It is 1936, and Miguel’s quiet life is turned upside down by the civil war. Spurred on by his best friend Pedro Tabares, Miguel enlists but almost immediately gets separated from him. He then manages to survive a series of tragic events, including the trenches, prison and even a botched firing squad. Miguel’s search for Pedro eventually proves fruitful, but they are permanently separated when tragedy strikes yet again.Throughout the absurdity of war, Miguel’s indomitable spirit and will to live has us both laughing and crying with him.
As Miguel says, “My dad was right. To live without laughter, that is really rough. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. And they even killed us. Although in my case, they didn’t do it very well.”
Newcomer Oscar Lasante plays a credible Miguel Gila, capturing his endless optimism and sense of humour even in the dark times of war.
Overall, a fitting tribute to the legendary great, and a beautiful message – that even in the worst of times, humour is what will see us through.
May I Speak With the Enemy is now showing as part of the HSBC Spanish Film Festival.
