I’ve never seen the original Footloose movie nor the remake, but have always loved the vibe and music of the 80s.
So when Perth Happenings offered the opportunity to review the Drew Anthony Creative musical at Planet Royale, I jumped at the chance. After all, this is the film that first featured the iconic belter ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler. I was understandably excited!
I’d also never watched a musical at Planet Royale. I was intrigued to see how the smaller stage could play host to a toe-tapping, energy filled performance like Footloose. I was delighted by the results!
Footloose follows teens Ren, (played by Ethan Churchill) and Ariel, (played by Sienna Mackay), both bemoaning their bad luck of having to reside in small American town Bomont. Both actors were fantastic, but my husband and I especially loved Sienna, who belted out the aforementioned ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ with gusto. Footloose features so many amazing songs, which the performers delivered flawlessly!
A special mention also goes to Humphrey Bower who delivered such a heartfelt and nuanced performance as Reverand Moore. The acting was excellent all round.
Footloose also features a captivating storyline. Being the daughter of a preacher myself, I could relate to the frustrated Ariel, tired of having a spiritual leader in place of a father. Knowing the pain of realising preachers make good mentors but poor dads, there were a few moments that were masterfully executed. So masterfully, that I winced with recognition.
While the original movie was set in the 80s, this production is set in the modern day. The musical did a good job of updating the themes for the present world.
All things considered, I’m giving Footloose 5 stars as it was so enjoyable and well executed. The musical has enticed me to watch the original and the remake, and is a fine example of Perth talent. Charming from beginning to end, Footloose has convinced me to watch more musicals at venue Planet Royale. It won’t disappoint.
Footloose runs until 8th June at Planet Royale – don’t miss out!
