Cold Storage, a Studio Canal production, is such a fun ride, with enough laughs and enough gore to excite and satisfy many palates. It tantalises with suspense and executes a steady flow of humour and horror from beginning to end.
This had a lot to do with the cast, which was perfect if this is what they were trying to produce. The creators of Zombieland, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man and Mission: Impossible brought the lightheartedness of Joe Keery and the seriousness of Liam Neeson, who we are starting to see more, quite favourably, in comedy.

The story starts when fragment of NASA falls in our own West Australian backyard in the 1970’s, bringing with a highly contagious, mutating fungus. To stop it from growing and spreading, it needed to be locked away in a very cold, sealed facility. After many years, climate change and other elements caused temperatures to rise and the fungus to ‘escape’.
Keery’s character, who was unfortunate enough to be working in this facility with his colleague, discovers the gruesome trail this fungus has left behind. They call on the only man (Neeson) able to destroy it to save humanity and the earth from extinction, as the microorganism spreads rapidly and destroys everything it touches.
You will be impressed with the use of cellular animation and nano-scale effects which give detailed visualisations of the mutating virus in its hosts. This tells a huge part of the story without words and keeps the story tight, fast moving and action packed.
I am a horror buff and very rarely watch comedies. However, I was glued to the screen the whole time and enjoyed going from clenching in suspense to laughing. It was such a well balanced movie; it wasn’t too much of either genre. I also loved the character development and seeing some of my favourite actors come together in this ridiculous story.
This is definitely one to watch.
