We know of Tom Allen from the English panel shows Would I Lie To You and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. So when we heard that he was performing his own stand-up comedy show in Perth, we jumped at the opportunity!
The Perth Comedy Festival 2025 has rolled into town and there are so many comedy performances to see.
When we arrive at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco, the stage is empty other than the back lighting and a lone microphone. Just past 7pm, Tom Allen arrives on stage, resplendent in his blue suit and double-breasted waistcoat, announcing very early that “I am still gay, in fact it is getting worse”.
Early in the show, Tom interacts with individuals in the audience. He is so clever chatting to people and being funny, all unscripted. Tom skillfully weaves his funny topics with audience members he has recently met into the stories, leaving us all in stitches.
Tom tells stories of school, family life, growing up different and life with his boyfriend in his distinctive voice and mannerisms. The facial expressions, eye rolling and side eyes add to the hilarity. He is also unafraid of laughing at his own idiosyncrasies and characteristics.
He talks about the reasonably recent death of his very direct father and the lessons he learned from him. One line sticks in my mind from his dad to his flamboyant son.
“Tom, there is a difference between scratching your ass and tearing the skin”.
The show of over an hour flew by and we laughed hard for most of it. The crowd gave him a rousing applause at the end. It is no wonder, this gig was a sellout.
As we go home, Tom’s Facebook page has updated with a thank you to the Perth audience and people he interacted with. If you get a chance to see Tom Allen live, jump at it for a great night out.
