West Australian Opera have released their programme for 2023. Like a pick & mix, they’re put together a programme with something for everyone. With Tickets on sale from December 1st, it’s the perfect Christmas gift for the theatre kid in your family.

West Australian Opera have used the 2023 season to celebrate WA talent and use local connections to take the audience on a journey of joy and self discovery. The programme packs in some classic and famous opera and musical theatre pieces alongside some boundary breaking new writing.

Carmen

24-25 February

WACA Ground

WA Opera opens 2023 with an outdoors performance as part of the Perth Festival. 150 Musicians and singers will fill the stage at the WACA ground in East Perth for this retelling of Bezet’s classic opera. Perth Festival is huge on music this summer and Carmen takes it’s place amongst performances and acts like Björk, Bon Ivor and Peaches to create a real festival of sounds and experiences.

23 March – 1 April

His Majesty’s Theatre

Eight performances of the Olivier Award winning Soundheim show made famous by Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep. Don’t worry, there’s no James Cordon in this version, but audiences will be able to follow the story of the baker and his wife heading into the woods on a hunt to reverse a witche’s curse.

Oratorio

20-22 April

Winthrop Hall

Bach’s Easter Oratorio will pure voiced chants echoing around the UWA venue of this three night extravagant collaboration. UWA’s Conservatorium of Music Presents the Symphony Chorus and Symphonic Chorus with WAO’s Wesfarmers Arts Young Artists in a WA premier which will see a new piece interlocked with the Bach.

His Majesty’s Theatre

Yes, I had to check the spelling on that one too. It’s an opera based on the play that you’re thinking of.. Which means if  you remember it from school you’ll know that this is a tragic story of what happens when desire overruns rationality. A true theatrical tragedy.

La bohéme

19-28 October

His Majesty’s Theatre

This collaboration between WAO and Opera Queensland is arguably Puccini’s most famous work. A story that has been told and retold since the mid 1800s about pursuing dreams and the shattering impact of poverty, illness and loss. As relevant today as it was in 1895 when it was first released as an opera.

Koolbardi wer Wardang

4 August

Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre

Regional WA doesn’t miss out this year either with an entirely Noongar language opera heading to Bunbury in August. Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse’s celebrate opera tells the story of rivalry between two brothers, Koolbardi the magpie and Wardang, the crow.
