Musical Comedian Sammy J returns to Perth with his Show “Hero Complex” to show how life can take unexpected turns and how one action can be the catalyst to life changing events.

Most should be familiar with Sammy J, either with his work on ABC or as part of the comedy duo Sammy J and Randy.
Walking in, I knew the type of comedy I was going to see. His songs are always hilarious and his story telling captivates audiences and sucks you in.
This is prevalent with the first scene with him walking on stage, telling us about how the federal police rocked up at his door and asked him to show where “it” was. He climbs a ladder on the stage, and then as everyone wants to know what he was getting from the attic, he abruptly tells the audience that this is the end of the story and to find out he will tell us all what happened in 55 minutes. It was a great way to get us invested and lets the audience know what kind of show they are in for.
Hero Complex gives us the story about Sammy’s love of the 1936 super hero, The Phantom. During the sixty minutes, I learned more about the comic book character than I ever wanted to know.
More importantly, I learned how wonderful it is to find people who share your interests and how those friendships can lead to unexpected results. As luck would have it, this show is not just about The Phantom. It is also about a school gardener named Duncan.
Like any comic book, each part of the story leads on to another and makes you want to pick up the next issue.
While I knew where the story of Sammy J would lead, I honestly had no idea where Duncan’s story was going. Finding out the end result of where Duncan ended up and how it kept intertwining through Sammy J’s life was thoroughly worth the payoff.
Whether or not it was intentional, the show also reminds us how we all believe we are the “main character” in the story.
Yet, everyone is participating in their own storyline and being their own hero, regardless of what other people do. The tragic and monumental moments in our lives that can define and shape our perceptions of life can sometimes be nothing more than an insignificant blip in the storyline of others.
Just like comic book characters, what happens in one series can affect others and can happen simultaneously without others knowing.
