To borrow (and modify) that famous line from Lara Bingle: PERTH, where were you?!
It was a travesty that the Lotterywest De Parel Spiegeltent was not packed to the brim for Frisky’s Reshuffle. Miss Frisky is a musical chameleon who has successfully merged improv, crowdwork and music into a must see Fringe package.

Miss Frisky, with the help of her four piece band, turns famous songs on their head by reimagining them in a different genre. The audience is invited to contribute songs and genres throughout the evening, with Miss Frisky egging everyone on to make it as unhinged as possible.
When I heard that Miss Frisky would tackle any genre, my first thought was: could she really do it all? Just like how one might be doubtful that a popstar could perform opera, I was quietly suspicious.
I am happy to admit that I was wrong. And not just “a little bit” wrong. But “huge mistake” wrong.
Miss Frisky has a powerful voice and effortlessly goes from a full on aria to gangsta rap. While genres shifted, her voice was consistently resonant fuelled by the confidence of knowing that she nailed the brief.
That confidence oozes into her onstage persona, making Miss Frisky a vivacious host.
However, this confidence never ventures into brashness. She good naturedly pokes fun at people, she encourages rather than cajoles. She also doesn’t rush her interactions, so it feels like she genuinely cares about creating a connection with her audience.
Nothing illustrates this better than the grand finale.
During the show I attended, she performed an upbeat, insiprational number, off the cuff. The lyrics of the song were based on two inspirational quotets that the audience provided. This would have been sufficiently impressive on its own.
However, she also managed to incorporate the names of ALL the guests she interacted with into the lyrics. She also injected what little details she managed to squeeze out of them. Consequently, on top of feeling like we were in the midst of a huge dance party, it felt deeply personal.
Before this fabulous finale, things were a little bit sombre.
Miss Frisky delivered a heartfelt thank you to everyone, from the band to the audience. She revealed that this show was initially conceived ten years ago. However, she was fixated on getting it just right, which is why it took so long to come to fruition.
As you can guess, this turned into a pep talk about how we need to seize the day. That it is better to do something than to do nothing out of fear of not achieving perfection.
But Miss Frisky, to me, you are PERFECT.
