What is the 27 Club?

The 27 Club is a group of mythical young musicians at the pinnacle of their careers, who died of various misadventures at the age of 27. There is a long list of entertainers who fit into the category, but this show’s all about Jimi Hendricks, Jim Morrison- The Doors, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain- Nirvana and Amy Winehouse.

It is therefore ironic that the 27 Club is performing at The Rechabite, a century old heritage hall in Northbridge that once hosted a movement that fought against the demons of alcohol.

From the very start, the highly credentialled 27 Club musicians, Sarah McLeod (Super Jesus), Carla Lippis and Dusty Lee Stephenson (The Wanderers) accompanied with superbly talented musicians gave it absolutely everything. It was like being in a dream where these legends of rock somehow magically appeared in one big mythical concert. It was that good.

The pulsating crowd was held in raptures by stunning performances by Carla Lippis with her incredible renditions of Amy Winehouse classics such as Rehab. Sarah McLeod nailed the raspy blues vocals of Janis Joplin. Dusty Lee Stepheson’s vocals and soaring guitar captured Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendricks perfectly.

And to top it off, several Doors classics completed a wonderful retro musical experience. The versatility of these musical talents was brilliant to see, even more impressive when you consider that Kevin Mitchell of Jebediah and Bob Evans fame couldn’t attend due to a family emergency.

The band cleverly weaves the heartbreaking stories of these troubled stars by utilising masterful narration, stunning projected imagery and, of course, heaps of great songs.

Overall, this musical tribute is right up with the very best.

27 Club is now showing at Fringe World until 15th February 2026.
