We just watched I am Martin Parr, part of the British Film Festival . It’s a documentary following Magnum Photographer Martin Parr. I gave the responsibility for the review to my husband Michael, as he is the photographer in our partnership.

As a passionate photographer, I love watching documentaries about anything involving photography. So, when the opportunity to review a 68-minute documentary titled, I Am Martin Parr came up, I was all in.
From beginning to end, I was totally captivated. But will it also work for non-photographers as well? Maybe or maybe not.
The documentary follows in Martin’s footsteps as he goes about seeking people immersed in their leisure activities. Much of the documentary is centred around exploring classic British beach resorts and theme parks.
Now in his mid 70’s and getting around with a mobile walking frame, it was fascinating to watch how Martin takes images of people seemingly unaware of his presence. Then something will catch his keen eye and with permission, he would capture ultra-close-up detail of a face or item of clothing.
Even though this might look like an invasive and unflattering approach to some, it is clear Martin has great affection and empathy for his subjects. What is more, people from all walks of life seem largely willing participants.
The beautifully crafted documentary directed by Lee Shuman, shows Martin Parr’s prodigious work ethic in documenting people’s activities since the early 1970s. The documentary is packed with his nostalgically funny and thought-provoking monochrome and colour images. I particularly like the image of flurry of seagulls gorging on chips by the British seaside.
In 1994, Martin Parr was granted membership of the highly prestigious and exclusive photojournalist organisation, Magnum Photos.
If you are student of photography, a hobbyist or an old pro like me, I highly recommend watching I Am Martin Parr. Will it work for non-photographers? If you are keen observer of humanity and their many quirks, I think the answer is most likely, yes.
It’s a big (slightly biased) five-star score from me.
I am Martin Parr opens on 13th November as part of the British Film Festival.
