While the musical stays true to the film’s core plot, several notable differences set it apart.
If you’re an avid fan of the cult classic film starring Whoopi Goldberg, it may be useful to know that the musical is only ‘inspired’ by the feature film. The live adaptation changes the narrative while adding depth to the characters.
It’s also based in the 70s now instead of the 90s. Consequently, there is a strong focus on disco, instead of motown.
Unlike other popular musicals like Priscilla or The Lion King, you can’t sing along to your favourite songs here. There are new songs that allow you to delve a bit deeper into the characters’ backgrounds, as they each have a story to sing. Sister Mary Lazarus, played by Rhonda Burchmore was one of my favourites to watch!
The production shines with a vibrant set design and dynamic lighting that immerses the audience in the lively world of the nuns. The spirited choreography and ensemble performances bring an added layer of energy that enhances the comedic elements, providing a fresh perspective of the story.
However, some core scenes felt rushed. There were moments where I felt that tension could have added value to the plot. There were also some moments where numbers felt a bit long, losing comedic value and pacing.
Overall, Sister Act the Musical in Perth is a joyful and spirited rendition that reimagines the beloved classic. With Donovan at the helm, this production is a must-see, showcasing her immense talent and the infectious joy of live theater.
