Is this going to be a normal Fringe show?
With the Frizz?
No Way!
This spin-off story of the nostalgic children’s tv-show introduces Ms Frizzle’s new, bright-eyed bunch of students to a more morbid scientific wonder – Murder.
If you love a twist on a quirky classic, Murder on the Magic School Bus is a delightful adventure. This is a concept packed with potential with a solid set up. Six university students find themselves tangled up in the murder of their classmate whilst under the guidance of the whimsical Ms Frizzle.
The young but talented cast brings enthusiasm to the stage, but the cliched characters don’t quite feel fleshed out. Xavier, the cool coffee lover has been struck down by the murderer with no clear motive. Of the survivors, there’s Lexi, the over-the-top ‘it’ girl; Ash, the troublemaker; Sam, the gym-loving jock; Charlie, the quiet artist; and Jamie, the aspiring doctor. Whilst this is a fun mix, they stick a little too close to stereotypes and lack depth.
There are many fun moments, and the pacing keeps the story moving along, but it is not enough to elevate the experience beyond light entertainment. If you are after a gripping mystery, this is not the field trip for you. If you are hoping for an enjoyable watch to fill in your night, it is worth a watch.
The interactive component of the show was slightly oversold. They could have leant further into audience interaction with this premise to uncover the murderer but alas the potential was left unrealised.
Overall, we enjoyed the light-hearted nature of the performance, the distinctive costumes of the characters and the engaging stage presences of the actors.
Murder On the Magic School Bus has 3 shows remaining, with the final performance on Saturday the 8th of Feb.
