We absolutely need more women in Science. So when I heard that The B-Plot Girls was running a science-related show for kids at Fringe, I had to check it out for myself.
Angela Leta Kaye is a biomedical scientist and with some help of a doctor friend, she’s crafted an introductory show to the human body. Angela also has a secret background in kids entertainment so this is not just a sit-down lecture. It is forty five minutes of songs, silliness and social engagement.
Angela is a lovely facilitator – bubbly without being over the top. She is also calmly patient towards the eager kids who were fully invested in their onstage tasks.
I brought the perfect plus one to review this show… a science teacher! We concurred that Angela and her show would be perfect for school incursions. She broke the science down into easy to understand morsels and presented it on a fun platter for the kids.
We attended the very first show of this fresh production, so understandably, there were some nerves and hiccups onstage. There were also bits where it felt like Angela was about to run off on a tangent. This is not a bad thing; to me, it signals her pure enthusiasm in sharing the weird and wonderful ways of the human body. This is great if you have inquisitive kids as she is happy to answer their questions.
I would have liked each section of the show to be a bit more in-depth. However, bearing in mind all the interactive elements and how that would have impacted the attention span of kids to sit and listen, it made sense that it wasn’t as detailed as I was expecting it to be.
Regardless of my feelings about it, I know one thing is true. This show is effective at engaging the kids long after they’ve left the theatre. Kiddo spent part of dinner yesterday asking his dad which foods were proteins and which were carbohydrates. For that, I give kudos to Angela for putting on a show that delighted and gave kids literal food for thought.
The Amazing Human Adventure is only running until Sunday. 2nd February – so get in quick for this adventure!
