Smile: The Story of Charlie Chaplin is a wonderfully engaging, funny, and poignant show that brims with charm, thanks in large part to its creator and performer, Marcel Cole. Blending physical comedy with heartfelt storytelling, Marcel engages with his audience, immersing them in the story.
Charlie Chaplin, once the most recognisable person on the planet, continues to inspire filmmakers, actors, and performers to this day. Known as ‘The Little Tramp’, after his most famous character, Chaplin’s life was not without controversy, and this show delves into the tumultuous events that led to his exile from the United States.
Drawing on his training in clowning, dance, and theatre, Cole seamlessly embodies Chaplin and uses these skills to create a genuine connection with the audience. His ability to bring audience members onto the stage and guide them into the story creates moments of spontaneous interaction that are both tender and hilarious, showcasing Cole talent for rapport building.
I asked Cole where his interest in the characters he performs comes from. His show The Ukulele Man, about famous comedian and Uke player George Forby is award winning, and both Forby and Chaplin come from similar genres.
“I like history” Cole tells me, before he explains that his grandfather and uncle were historians. Consequently, he grew up listening to them talking about historical moments.
“I am also fascinated by the modern history of the WWII period”, which is fitting considering Chaplin’s controversial time as a suspected communist.
Smile: The Charlie Chaplin Story is a wonderful performance, and I recommend it to everyone. You don’t need to know much about Chaplin to enjoy this show, but you’ll leave entertained, enlightened, and inspired to explore the life and times of The Little Tramp.
