My Freaky Family is an Australian-Irish animated film based on the popular children’s books, The Floods.

The Floods are an eccentric, magical family trying to live an inconspicuous life in the suburbs of Misty Falls. In reality, they’re hiding out after escaping the evil forces in their homeland far far away.

Twelve year old Betty feels like the odd one out as the only non-magical person in her family. She attends a normal school and has normal friends. She plays the violin in school band.

Despite this, she’s desperate to learn the magical ways of her family. Betty’s parents are insistent that’s not in her destiny, dismissing her questions in the hopes she will just get on with life.

In trying to understand her place in the family, Betty realises she may have magical powers after all when she accidentally unleashes magic in a song she plays on her violin. When her family gets kidnapped as a result of this, Betty must trust in herself to develop her magical abilities to rescue them.

This fun animated adaptation has a great cast including Miranda Otto, Richard Roxburgh and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series). The story flows nicely with a lot of humour, and the characters are all delightfully strange, yet engaging. Well, except the twins. I’d be worried if they were my kids.

The film ends with the opportunity for a sequel and considering this is from a book series, it’ll be fun to see what adventures Betty and her family get up to in the future.

My Freaky Family opens in cinemas, 24th October.
