Have you seen the incredible artistic talent of West Australian youths displayed at the Art Gallery of Western Australia yet?
If you haven’t visited AGWA recently, you should step into the art gallery and take some time to understand the complexities of growing up in the modern Australian landscape.
An exhibit supporting our young artists’ work, the Western Australian Pulse is showcasing 3 prize-winning pieces and 49 bodies of work from some of the most promising Year 12 high school students. Marking the 30th anniversary of Pulse Perspectives, now known as WA Pulse thanks to major sponsorship with the West Australian, this annual display offers you a chance to see an insight into growing up in 2022.
On the cusp of adulthood, these young artists tackle some of the most heavily discussed topics across our country through their fresh perspectives. With art pieces in all mediums, from paintings, fabric, digital and mixed media, their impressive body of work discusses complex Australian concerns.
I was impressed to see our young people thinking deeply about themes such as political refugees, abortion, domestic violence, dissociation of everyday media to their own fears and hopes for our future. Their efforts to speak up and be heard is an incredible look at the next generation of leaders, decision makers and passionate global advocates.
Now at a time where funding for the arts is limited more than ever, and the rise of global tensions impacts all, the necessity for understanding our own society and others is even more important.
For these young artists, being displayed in WA’s top gallery offers an incredible opportunity to follow their talent. A first step to pursuing their dreams – this exhibition in the heart of the city is concrete proof that working in the arts industry may be challenging, but ultimately a possible and rewarding career path that will inspire and influence our futures.
