After a year that turned YUCK on its head, Yuck Circus: Deadset is set to hit the Woodside Pleasure Gardens bigger than ever before.
All-female West Australian larrikins YUCK Circus are back with their brand-new show Deadset; bringing Fringe World a ‘ripper’ night of high-flying Circus, Comedy, and Cabaret from January 15 until February 14 2021.
YUCK is a West Aussie production company keen on championing the female voice across live performance. The team have won numerous awards for their performances such as Overall Adelaide Fringe Emerging Artist, Melbourne Fringe Best Circus, Melbourne Fringe Best Emerging Circus Performer, Sydney Fringe Best Physical Theatre, Dance, and Circus.
With Fringe World’s support, these home-grown heroes performed at some of the world’s largest festivals, such as Edinburgh Fringe, and alongside Australian icon Kylie Minogue at Glastonbury Music Festival. 2020 was set to be an even bigger year for the company, until the pandemic.
Within the first week of lockdown, they had lost 100% of their contracts, therefore all of their income for the year.
YUCK Director, and Broome artist Georgia Deguara was faced with this immediate complication.
“It was absolutely heart-breaking to see all our hard work disappear in less than a week,” she said.
Onstage, behind the tech desk, in a creative or managing role; YUCK gives femme-identifying individuals a hot go to show the world what they’ve got.
Deadset is inspired by the new reality of Australian-based touring. As the cast of YUCK are unlikely to present overseas for a while, they’ve chosen this work to celebrate local talent, story, and culture.
Described as ‘Flight of the Conchords meets Cirque du Soleil,’ the cast are using their comedic flair to reflect on how lucky they are to be in a country where events like Fringe World can happen, and hope to help the audience to feel good about where we are.
Deguara is excited to present this world-first showing of Deadset to her local audience.
“We are incredibly privileged in WA to be able to participate in an event on this scale,” she said.
“Due to restrictions, we haven’t been able to secure any performances since March, that’s why performing in the 2021 Fringe World is so important to us.”
Yuck Circus: Deadset will run from January 15 to February 14 at the Lotterywest De Parel Spiegeltent in the Woodside Pleasure Gardens, during Fringe World 2021.
