Who says Date Night needs to break the bank? Not me! There are so many ways to add a little something special to your night together without needing to max your credit card. Looking for cheap date nights in Perth inspiration? Here’s the ultimate guide –
THE STAY HOME DATES
The great isolation of mid 2020 taught us many things. One thing I took away was to learn to be more adventurous when planning a date night – to look beyond the newest bar or a fancy restaurant and get creative. I can honestly say that two of the best dates I’ve ever been on were right in my back yard during the peak of WA’s Covid isolation this year.
It was our 3 year wedding anniversary, and since we weren’t able to get out and about, we each planned a date night at home to surprise the other.
Mitch’s date – The one in Paris
My darling husband proposed to me at the restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower in Paris the day before Christmas eve… I know right. So for his date he, and I kid you not, RECREATED PARIS! He turned our back garden into a French inspired garden bistro using things from around house, our engagement photo, our wedding champagne glasses, Edith Piaf playing through the speakers, and my bike perched with a basket full of flowers and fresh bread. He cooked a bbq and we sat under the twinkling fairy lights all evening.
Katie’s Date – The one with the Home Movie
We are total movie buffs, so when we couldn’t get to the cinema I knew I needed to create something even better at home. I borrowed a projector kit that runs off your phone, set up a blow up mattress covered in blankets and pillows, and made sure we had all the best movie snacks ready to go. When he came outside to see Jurassic Park ready to play on the projector screen he was a very happy chap.
Don’t just throw a movie on the tv and sit on the sofa – make it special!
Craft night
I confess this is stolen from a friend of mine who has been having craft nights for years! So simple – decide what you fancy creating, pop out to Spotlight or even Kmart (when you’re a crafty nutter like me you already have a chest of drawers full of all the things) and set yourselves up at the dining table with a bottle of wine – done! Some ideas are – Wall art for your home, a joint gift to give to a mutual friend on their upcoming birthday, Christmas gifts from you both, each make something for the other… the list is endless!
DIY Scavenger Hunt
You can make this as small or as big as you like. It could be just around your house, or I once did a scavenger hunt for Mitch that started in Perth CBD and took a whole weekend, all the way through Bunbury and Margaret River, finishing back at our house on Sunday night. Not cheap, but sooo fun. Why not create a smaller version at home or in your local area? A few hours of fun and all you have to fork out for is treasure at the end.
OUT AND ABOUT DATES
Foreshore fish and chips
Perth is so completely magical at night, when the sun is setting and the lights of the city skyline get brighter and brighter. Grab some fish and chips in South Perth and set yourself up on a picnic blanket at the Foreshore.
Pub Specials Nights
If there’s one thing an Aussie pub does well, it’s a specials night. Once upon a time I think Mitch knew where to get a $15 steak every night of the week! Keep your eyes peeled at your local watering hole for their Parmi night or Roast dinner specials!
Wine Tasting
One of the great things about having a wine region right on our doorstep. Wine tasting is Free. Use it as an opportunity to learn which of our local wines you really like! Pluis you only need part with your dollars if you really want to purchase a bottle of something you loved.
Beach Olympics
This is a play on the Easter Olympics our family created for our Covid isolation Easter celebrations, so this can be a back yard thing too! It starts with borrowing all manner of games from friends and family – a cricket bat, bocci, potato sacks, volleyball and more. Then play each other at each game to see who has to buy who a quick pint on the way home. Pack a couple of sandwiches and snacks in an esky to make a day of it.
Groupon
If you want to broaden your date planning horizons, Groupon could be your best friend for cheap date nights in Perth. A quick search of activities available in Perth showed:
Juan Rando Salsa classes from $10
Faber Vineyard wine tasting and share platter for two $35
Paint & sip evenings , various prices all over Perth
Kings Park Picnic
This date can cost you as much or as little as you like. Stop off at an IGA and stock up on delicious fresh pasta salad and a cold pressed juice, or keep it simple by wrapping a couple of bacon and egg toasties in alfoil before you leave home. Either way, a picnic followed by a walk around the Kings Park Botanic Gardens is a lovely way to spend a Sunday.
Mini Golf at Oasis, Swan Valley
I challenge you not to have a laugh at Supa golf. At $16pp it’s such a fun way to spend the afternoon without breaking the bank.
Get Active
It’s Spring, the perfect time to get out and about for a walk or hike around some of Perth’s naturally stunning areas. Not too hot, not too cold. Here are some of my fave spots for a weekend walk:
Ellis Brook Valley Reserve, Bells Rapids, Noble Falls, Herdsman Lake, Burswood Loop. All for the price of a coffee reward at the end.
