Armed with a few guitars and their amazing voices, four illustrious Perth musicians wove their magic like a comforting hug at the end of a long work day.

The Trio, consisting of Jessie Gordon, Helen Shanahan and Allira Wilson, along with Jessie’s long time best friend Mark Turner, performed a beautifully curated mix of original songs with evocative lyrics and spellbinding harmonies, as well as well-chosen covers. And for a little fun, we even got an impromptu jazzy rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall, which the group segued into when Helen revealed she was recently asked to play this at an Irish pub.

But the true draw of the evening was their original music – each one of them a storyteller in their own right, it was such a treat to have them unite their creative talents on the same stage. Among my favourites were Mark’s gorgeously emotional song, Water, about being at Esperance Beach with his brother; Helen’s Under the Maple Tree, off her latest album Canvas (2022) had me trawling Spotify for more of her music; Allira’s My Ruined Lyrics, a poetically articulate song about what I imagine must have been a sleep-deprived time with a new baby, made me smile. And of course, the extremely catchy new song written by Jessie about Bones – in fact, it is so new, she hadn’t even finalised its title.

To cap off this perfect show, they sang Didn’t Leave Nobody But the Baby, from O Brother Where Art Thou. A truly outstanding night and a resounding 5 stars.

The Trio: Moonlight and Love Songs is now showing at Fringe World until 25th January 2026.
