⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
MARVELous: A Risque Parody has been a highly anticipated show among the comic book geeks.
This is evident, judging the long lines waiting to enter Ice Cream Factory’s Outdoor space. In fact, I don’t think I’ve EVER seen an opening line form so early or snake so insiduously through the massive space.
So is it worth the hype?

ABSOLUTELY.
While MARVELous is indeed a risque parody of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it is so much more than a rambling tribute.
There are nods to pop culture in general. From references to the actors behind the masks to memes and fan theories, you don’t have to be fully invested in the MCU to enjoy this show. If you are a popculture geek, you will chuckle at the Easter eggs hidden in plain sight.
But even if you are living under the rock and have no idea who Pony… I mean… Tony Stark is, there is so much to marvel at in this show.
This is a full scale production, with, I assume, no expense spared. The opening video on the big screen alone would have cost a pretty penny. I won’t spoil it but Marvel fans will fully appreciate this apt introduction to the show.
It’s also a precursor to how visually arresting this show is. The spectacle is not limited to the graphics on the big screen either. There’s so much attention paid to the the props and costumes as well.
In particular, the rolling cubes throughout the show are an innovative set design element. They provide mini studios on the stage for each act. They also serve as an elevated platform for performers.
Consequently, the large outdoor stage feels well-filled, even if there are only three performers in the space.
It’s hard for me to pick a favourite performance in this show. Each character’s act was precisely tailored.
Of course Loki, Spiderman and Lady Thor were airbound. Similarly, the original badass, Scarlet Witch, interspersed stylised combat with dancing en pointe.
So while a parody often implies mockery, MARVELous is instead an affectionate ribbing of the source material.
I also loved that this risque parody was not just limited to the female form. MARVELous are equal opportunity striptease artists – in fact, the most revealing act involves two men.
Additionally, women aren’t simply sexually objectified. They are portrayed as being capable and strong like their male counterparts. Case in point: the aforementioned Scarlet Witch act as well as the female Tony Stark.
And perhaps this female Tony Stark is the best metaphor for MARVELous as a whole.
Imitation is the best form of flattery, they say. MARVELous doesn’t just imitate our favourite superheroes, it shakes them up and pours them into a punchy cocktail of perfectly executed numbers, with notes of humour and spice for a full-bodied taste.
And if this review isn’t enough of a ringing endorsement of the show, perhaps my Fringe purchase history will. I have personally purchased tickets for round two. And honestly, I’m just as excited to relive the experience.
