One Date after another but things just aren’t working out like the movies.

Rom-coms have sold us tropes and cliches that always result in the quirky but relatable main character getting swept off their feet by the seemingly out-of-their-league love interest… but is that reality?

Anatomy of a rom-com is a comedic theatre performance that draws audiences into the world of Dr Jessica (Monroe Myles) and flirty bar tender Drew (Paige Alexander) as they endeavour to fix Jessica’s love-life blues.

Drew is confident that she has successfully analysed rom-coms to deliver the fool-proof formulae for love, but she didn’t account for the uncontrollable – those pesky little things called emotions. Drew acts as Jessica’s dating coach, pushing her towards her crush whilst audiences root instead for the two to turn towards each other!

Jessica is a smart and professional doctor but clueless when it comes to romance, which leads her through a whirlwind of schemes to try and charm a match. From starting fights at the hospital, risking her job and undergoing a makeover montage, she is willing to try it all.

The cast is filled out by Hot Doctor, the love interest, Rory the reality check and dynamic duo; Alex and Max who speak the audience’s minds with quick wit and one-liners. This makes for a well-rounded show that will have you genuinely invested in the outcome, cheering for the wins and cringing at the cliched tropes that burn out gloriously!

The set is simple but well thought out to seamlessly transition between locations and props are used tastefully to give comedic relief.

Anatomy of a Rom-Com is a joyful and light-hearted watch that had the audience both laughing and cheering.

Check out this love story at Fringe World until 9th of Feb, showing at the Jonesway theatre.
