The Little Hoo Haa’s format pits two teams of performers—“Bones” and “Hearts”—against each other in a playful competition. Audience members hold up scorecards to vote for their favourite team after each round, adding an audience participation element that keeps kids engaged – something which I think is vital in kids’ shows!
My favourite game from the show involved the audience choosing personality traits for an imaginary babysitter. These characteristics were jotted down on a whiteboard, and then contestants were brought back on stage to guess them during a raucous game of charades. The combination of over-the-top acting, frantic guessing, and sheer comedic timing had the audience roaring with laughter.
One thing I loved about The Little Hoo Haa is its live musicians, who create spontaneous backing tracks to accompany the performances. This musical element is a rare treat in improv and adds an extra layer of panache!
In one segment, the performers had to create songs and raps on the spot, dancing and singing to the live beats while improvising their scenes – which cracked me and my girls up.
By the end of the show, the Hearts emerged victorious, but the real winners were the audience, who left the venue smiling despite stepping into the sweltering 40-degree heat outside.
I’d rate The Little Hoo Haa 4.5/5 and recommend it for children aged 7 and above. While younger kids might enjoy the silliness, some of the quick-witted humour could go over their heads. Overall, it’s an energetic, laugh-out-loud experience perfect for families.
The Little Hoo Haa is running until 2nd February at Fringe World. Catch it while you can!
