CALM: A Musical Meditation was an extraordinary Fringe experience. It is completely opposite to the hyper-realistic, hyperactive shock value or family friendly circus type shows we tend to associate Fringe with.
Knowing what a complete stress-head I am, my editor-in-chief jumped at the chance to book me in to attend this, to get some well-needed chill time. And I can’t thank her enough!!
Perth jazz royalty, Jessie Gordon and Mark Turner, guided us on a meditative journey that led us into a serene world of tranquility.
Their haunting yet peaceful vocals, combined with the use of mesmerising loop machine, created an enchanting soundscape. This live performance with guitars, piano, and saxophone, created a continuous, divine melody that washed over the room, filling every corner with soothing notes. I wish I recorded the whole evening to replay at home. Preferably in a warm soft scented bubble bath with candles and rose petals.
The performance took place at Moana Hall, an art deco historic building in the heart of Perth city. Its soaring ceilings and polished floorboards enhanced the acoustics to perfection.
The venue was a sanctuary where the audience could disconnect and retreat to their own safe, peaceful space. There was even an area with pillows and a rug to lay down on if you wanted to take relaxation to the next level.
What made CALM: A Musical Meditation special was its profound connection with the deeply entranced audience. The artists sat encircled by the audience, making the experience feel both personal and communal. The immersed central stage, softly lit by twinkling fairy lights and draped in vines, evoked the serenity of the Garden of Eden. It truly enhanced the show’s intimate and romantic atmosphere.
This rare blend of music, ambience, and presence left a lasting impression of warmth and relaxation. In fact, I loved it so much, I stayed for their second performance that night!
If you’re seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, CALM is a perfect opportunity to unwind and bask in a moment of divine calm. I highly recommend booking when it comes back to Perth.
Until then, you MUST check out the talented duo when you see their respective names pop up on ANY gigs around Perth. Check out Jessie and Mark’s pages to keep posted on what they’re up to. You won’t be disappointed!
