Now, it’s super tempting when talking about comedy clubs to write something super cheesy like “laughter is the best medicine”, so I’ll avoid the cringe factor and give it to you straight: If you haven’t been to the Comedy Lounge Perth yet… what the flip are you waiting for?
This family-run venue offers a huge array of comedy shows and events, and has hosted hilarious local and international acts like Peter Rowsthorn, Randy the Puppet, Tom Gleeson, Perthonality Famous Sharron, Arj Barker, Rove, Jim Jeffries and Stephen K Amos just to name a few, and that’s not to mention all of the new talents that shows up to have a crack at their Big Open Mike shows!
I chatted briefly with one of the owners John McCallister who spoke about his desire to try and replicate the “Seinfield experience” and bring it to Perth; “I just wanted to capture that vibe from the start of the sitcom when Jerry Seinfeld is doing stand-up in that cool-looking comedy club to a packed crowd. I scouted for inspiration at comedy clubs all throughout places like London and New York… but I think we’ve nailed it!” said John.
And nailed it they certainly have. The performance space is the perfect blend of feeling intimate without being too crowded which is not an easy task to accomplish!
There’s also a bar and kitchen that offer a wide array of tasty treats like pizzas, chips and cheeseboards (perfect for dramatic spit-takes after a belter of a joke!) and the drinks are well-priced and plentiful because we all know that a bit of social lubrication can make anything funnier!
There are shows running from Wednesday until Saturday every week, starting from 6pm weekdays, and there is even a Clean Comedy (read: no swears) show on Saturday at 4pm – and with prices starting from a teensy $10, its literally fun for the whole family! They can even take group bookings and functions for certain shows – complete with drinks and food packages. They even have a great offer for students – on Wednesday nights, just show your student card for a free drink* with your ticket!
If you are looking for a great night out with mates, your family, or literally anyone, then check out the Comedy Lounge Perth website for show information and ticket sales or find them Upstairs at 413 Murray St, Perth CBD (look out for the Comedy Lounge car parked out front!)
