The Book of Mormon – outrageous, unexpected and ABSOLUTELY hilarious.

If you think you’ve seen every type of musical, think again!  I headed to Crown Theatre to catch The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award-winning musical, and let’s just say… it’s definitely NOT your traditional night at the theatre!

We follow the adventures of two very different young missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, as they head off on a quest to spread the word and change the world. What could possibly go wrong?

Elder Price is the confident, ambitious dreamer, while Elder Cunningham has an imagination that takes a few creative liberties! Together, they embark on one seriously unexpected adventure.

And, the humour! This show is cheeky, outrageous, politically incorrect and completely over the top. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along come some truly unexpected ‘guest appearances’ from the likes of Darth Vader, Adolf Hitler and Jeffrey Epstein. Gasp! Definitely not names I expected to encounter on a night out at the theatre!

Then there are the dance moves. Some classic musical theatre moves and we even get a Riverdance moment (yes, really!) and some very questionable squat drops!  The choreography, catchy songs, energetic cast and brilliantly timed comedy keep the laughs coming.

What I loved is that beneath all the outrageous humour, there’s a clever, satirical story about faith, friendship, hope and the lengths people will go to believe in something.

It’s bold, it’s bonkers, it’s deliberately offensive at times, and it certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you enjoy your comedy with a side of shock value and plenty of toe-tapping tunes, this one is worth considering.

My verdict? Forget everything you think you know about musicals. The Book of Mormon throws the rulebook out the window and dances all over it!
