With summer nearly upon us, we can look forward to heading to one of Perth’s open-air cinemas to indulge in a feel-good flick. So whether you’re planning your next date or making chill evening plans with your friends, these outdoor cinemas are bound to make your summer more memorable.
Also, here’s a word of the wise: don’t forget to bring your insect repellent, blankets and umbrellas (if there’s a rainy forecast)!
Luna Outdoor Cinema Leederville
We all know and love the cinematic charm of Luna Leederville, but their outdoor cinema truly takes the cake. With cosy seating in a courtyard style set-up, Luna Outdoor presents the perfect casual viewing experience for all. You can even treat yourself to one of many delicious cuisines along the Leederville dining strip before heading in. Note, these aren’t your typical blockbuster films though, but rather, more alternative films that will linger in your mind and get you thinking.
Lotterywest Films Crawley
You can’t have Perth Outdoor Cinema without Lotterywest films. If you’re after something different, the annual Lotterywest Films at UWA Somerville Auditorium never disappoints. Having been here many a time over the years, it’s opened my eyes to all kinds of foreign films I’d never thought I’d love and had me learning about new genres and cultural contexts. Even better, being perched beneath the starry sky and towering pine trees makes for an extraordinary experience itself. If this all sounds up your alley, be sure to come early to guarantee yourself the best seat in the house.
Rooftop Movies Perth
If there’s any Perth outdoor cinema that packs a punch, it’s Rooftop Movies. Featuring a stunning backdrop of Perth city and colourful beanbags, this venue is centrally located on the top floor of the CPP Parking building. Plus, if you’re running short on time to grab dinner, have no fear! Served up hot and fresh, Mack Daddy’s is on-site all season to grace you with their 22-inch Mack Daddy’s New York style pizzas.
Prison Cinema Fremantle
As a unique experience, the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison will be screening some of the best prison movies of all time come January 2021. Bring your own fold-up chair, some snacks and your group of friends to enjoy the atmosphere and live music beforehand. As well as that, their premises include a fully licensed bar. For an extra $19.90, you can also take part in a tour of the Prison before your movie starts. Now that’s an outdoor cinema with a twist!
Moonlight Cinema Perth
Last but not least, Kings Park is a undeniably fantastic picnic spot. Combine that with an outdoor movie screening of your choice, and you know you’re set for a great low-key night! Whether you want to kick it old school with some classic cinema snacks or bring something fancier like a cheese board, it’s all up to you. When making your way in during sunset, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful native foliage. Luckily, there’s plenty of free parking too.
