Look, if you ask me, it’s never ever too early to start buying Christmas presents and I’m always on the hunt for something a bit different. Personally I am probably a little OTT (ok, ok a lot) when it comes to gifts because I absolutely love, love, love, love the whole present buying, gift wrapping, present giving process a little too much but there are still times when I stress over ways to keep it interesting.

Enter my solution – MARKETS!

Yep, love them. It’s two birds one stone some might say because you can have a little bit of an outing with the fam and get some shopping done at the same time. Markets are not just all fruit and veg anymore they’re hubs of locals coming together with all sorts of unique goods and services, divine food options and things to keep the little ones entertained too.

We’ve compiled a selection of Pop Up Markets that are due to open soon for the spring/summer series and a couple that are already in full swing in the lead up to Christmas.

Why not seek out some markets the next time you have a free weekend and discover the talents and local produce of your fellow West Aussies!

swan settlers market

Swan Settlers Market, located in the heart of the Swan Valley, is home to a wonderful range of friendly and passionate artisans, growers and producers!

Entry is FREE and all are welcome. Come along with your family and friends and discover numerous stalls offering, fresh produce, handmade arts, crafts, treats, fashion and accessories.

There is also an international food court, a gin distillery and cellar door, treats and confectionery, preserves, chutneys, cheese, and of course, coffee and cake!

Plus live music, kids’ activities and playgrounds, and so much more! The market is indoor and air-conditioned with free parking and only 30 minutes from Perth CBD.

History Of The Market Place

Framed by a rumbling railway, rolling hills and lush vineyards, the Swan Settlers Market has a rich historical tapestry woven into its 100-year-old walls.

The building was constructed on the rich growing soils of the Swan Valley in 1919, to utilise the convenience of the East-West railway line. The fruit packing shed was the lifeblood of the region, showcasing the sun-kissed produce of the Valley through all seasons and became one of the largest fruit exporters in WA.

It began with soldier resettlement after World War I. Originally a large landholding, it was divided into ten acre-blocks to encourage the soldiers to come back and re-establish themselves in the region. They were given plots of land to grow grapes and apricots that were packed inside this massive shed. Unfortunately, the soldiers were not amazing growers and the land was eventually taken over by new settlers.

In the late 1920s, a large number of Yugoslavian men wandered over from the Goldfields, and eventually took over Swan Settlers Co-Operative. They were the largest populations of Yogoslavians outside of Europe. It was because of this that the Yugoslavian King Peter II, visited the humble Valley and Co-Op circa in the late 1930s. After 80 years of operation, Swan Settlers Co-op had to close its doors.

Now, new life has sprung and the corridors are once again pumping with people and purpose.

The Swan Valley is steeped in history and amazing talent.
