4 star review

Be transported to the streets of New Orleans and enjoy jazz under the stars with Adam Hall and his Hot 6.

Adam Hall and The Velvet Playboys perform “Hot Jazz” at the Courtyard in the State Theatre, playing a repertoire of Jazz and Blues music predominantly from the 20s through to the 50s. They also throw in a couple of unique pieces by “corrupting” popular songs to make them jazzier (did you know that John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ could be jazz-ified? It can). There’s storytelling from the Roaring 20s, honky-tonk, and songs in French and Italian, setting the scene and taking the audience on a journey to experience the best of New Orleans jazz culture.

The band of six consists of some of WA’s best musical talent, with Adam Hall (Host, Vocals, Trumpet), Mark Turner (Guitar), Anthony Dodos (Trombone), Bronton Ainsworth (Drums), Kane Shaw (Double Bass), and Tim Voutas (Keys). Given the band’s reputation in the WA music scene, it was unsurprising to the see the show was fully booked, and the courtyard brimming with people of all ages and walks of life. Adam Hall is a particularly gifted in his ability to entertain and engage the audience, and he has an incredibly captivating stage presence. In between songs, he shares stories from New Orleans and jazz history, as well as chatting to various people in the crowd and keeping the mood light with his quick wit. We are also given brief solos by each musician, further showcasing the exceptional talent within band.

Dressed in Jazz Age Tuxedos reminiscent of the 1920s, the band created a great atmosphere for the audience to really get into the mood. Spirits were high in the courtyard, and showgoers got out of their seats to head to the dancefloor and boogie with the band. There were couples, friends and family members, dancing with complete strangers and having the best time – it was the most wholesome fun I’ve seen at a Perth show in a while.

It was certainly a night to remember and show that could be enjoyed by anyone and everyone – so long as you like great music and having fun.
