The 40th-anniversary Australian tour of Cats has pounced into Crown Theatre!
As a virgin to the classic musical, I was impressed with the rich operatic voices of the ‘Jellicle Tribe’ and the powerful feline inspired choreography.
The cast is exceptional from top to bottom. Gabriyel Thomas delivers a hauntingly powerful Grizabella, her rendition of Memory sent shockwaves through the theatre with emotion and vulnerability. When she sang, you could hear a pin drop. Todd McKenney, back on home turf, plays a strong, dual role as Bustopher Jones and Asparagus.

From a production standpoint, Cats is stunning. The set evokes a gritty junkyard, oversized tires, a battered oven, and moonlit corners – all cleverly lit to create shadows, atmospheres, and hidden alcoves. The cats also create an immersive experience, charging through aisles and disappear into the set. The choreography, under Chrissie Cartwright’s guidance, is tight, precise, and beautifully in character, ranging from balletic leaps to playful tap routines.
Supported by outstanding sound and lighting design, the production honours the classic while keeping it vibrant and modern. But don’t worry, that 80s flair is still there with the costumes, wigs and makeup… and who could miss the leg warmers!
If you haven’t experienced Cats before, this Perth run is the perfect time to discover why it remains a timeless favourite.
Cats is running at Crown Theatre until 6th December – get your tickets now!
