“There was a flat-earther in the front row…” Luke McGregor explained during his return to stand-up comedy in show ‘Okay, Wow’ last night, and it all seemed to flow from there. He may have had an 8-year hiatus during which time he’d gotten married, acquired two-step children, had a baby, been diagnosed with autism and bought several chickens, but the laughs didn’t stop. He was as delightful as ever.

I’ve been a Luke McGregor fan for years. I know his trademark brand of comedy well. He is endearing, haltering, uncertain, but supremely relatable and hilarious.

As he was referring back to the papers at his feet, he jokingly quipped, “oh, there’s no notes there, it just says, ‘you’ve got this’.” Whether they were copious notes or merely an encouragement to keep going, Luke McGregor’s sense of comedic timing was as strong as ever. The show was a fun jaunt through actors posing as astronauts, whether or not there are bugs in your spaghetti and the perils of baby ‘poo-namis’.

A lot of Luke’s humour used to revolve around his lack of luck in love. He has uncovered a new wealth of comedy in settling down and becoming a father, and the jokes were just as well received by the audience. “You’ve got this”, someone in the front gleefully called out, another of the ‘positive heckles’ he received throughout the night.

If you haven’t watched Luke McGregor perform before, don’t deny yourself the opportunity. Not only is he very funny, but this is his first return in 8 years. He might be up a few chickens and a brood of children but he is just as delightfully self-deprecating, sweet, hilarious and talented as he was sans chickens.

Okay, Wow is only showing until 2nd February!!
