The Fringe-favourite team of Bogan Literature is back this Christmas! This time, they’re armed with a cheeky and uniquely Aussie take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Set amidst the uniquely Australian Christmas chaos, audiences are taken on a rollicking journey with Ebenezer Scrooge – a grumpy property mogul, who’d rather endure the sweltering Perth heat alone than embrace the festive season.
Dean Lovatt, the mastermind behind Bogan Literature, stars as Scrooge. He deftly balances humour and humanity in a performance that anchors the chaotic brilliance of the show. Lovatt’s Scrooge is hilariously unrepentant until confronted by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, played with distinctive Aussie flair by Sarah Courtis and Andrew Dawson.
Lovatt’s script masterfully blends satire with homage. While poking fun at the classic tale and Australian Christmas traditions – such as the frantic hunt for Honey Ham or the inevitable Lynx gift pack – the show retains the story’s timeless message of redemption and community. The cast’s quick changes and multi-role performances add a dynamic energy, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
The production enhances the experience, with Tracey Shaw’s inventive set bringing the chaotic energy of Garden City Shopping Centre and the familiar backyard patio to life.
What sets this show apart is its deep connection to its audience. The humour is steeped in West Australian culture, with references to iconic spots like Bunnings and some colourful ocker language! The humour, while quintessentially Australian, resonates universally thanks to the core themes of love, family, and second chances.
Ultimately, Bogan Literature Presents: A Christmas Carol is a hilarious celebration of Aussie Christmas. It is brimming with wit, charm, and a touch of sentimentality. So whether you’re a Fringe veteran or a Dickens enthusiast, this production offers a refreshing Australian twist on a holiday classic.
