A new show born out of COVID restrictions will debut at Fringe 2021, backed by the prowess of internationally celebrated creatives who wouldn’t otherwise be in Perth over the summer.
The Underground follows the classic narrative of two lovers in the night with an overarching story of irresistible desire and lust, coupled with unparalleled euphoria. Can you take the heat?
A true silver lining to lockdown, the show is a debut for the newly formed Elysian Creative. The Perth based performance and concept dance brand was created by Choreographer Rafaela Lico and The Underground acted as a project to connect performers during isolation.
After major success as an online class platform, Elysian Creative began running a sold-out workshop series in Perth after restrictions were lifted. The company now connects Perth based creatives for commercial dance work and specialist curated performances across WA.
With an array of captivating dancers, live percussion, hypnotising vocals, speciality acts and quick- witted comedy from MC Dave Callan, Lico has endeavoured to create an experience bursting with energy and passion:
“By entering The Underground, I want every audience member to feel as though they are being swept away from reality and captured by the atmosphere of the club,” she said.
“I want everyone in the audience to want to be on the edge of their seats, wishing they were a part of the onstage story.”
The show promises audiences will be subject to an escape from the day-to-day, diving into the dark depths of a sexy underground club with all the trimmings of a good night out. Watch as lovers try to find each other, interrupted and woven together, set to the backing of live percussion from Mark McDonald and the vocal stylings of Mia Simonette.
The Underground features Rafeala Lico, comedian Dave Callan, Fringe veteran Natalie Oakes, dancers Lisa Drennan and Tane Tipoki, and Braydon Nicholas, along with vocalist and dancer Mia Simonette.
Lico boasts the talent of the creative team who have performed internationally and possess credits such as Sony Entertainment, Rove, Factory Festival, The Dance Collective, IGA Carols by Candlelight and touring with Australian Idol’s Paulini Curuenavuli.
“This production brings together years of passion and dedication to my craft, and I get to work alongside some of Perth’s best creatives. I can’t wait to see Perth talent shine,” she said.
The Underground’s energy packed, star studded production is the perfect way to end your night at fringe and will be bringing the heat to Girls School from January 27th to February 3rd 2021.
