The Perth September school holidays are upon us, and although it’s lovely to have time with the young ones in your life, finding things to do with them can be a test of both your creativity and finances. Never fear, we’re here with the best cheap or free events coming up in the next two weeks.
THE ADVENTURES OF SNUGGLEPOT AND CUDDLEPIE, Perth Cultural Centre
The classic Gumnut Babies will be brought to life in a family-friendly dance performance by West Australian Ballet. Part of the appropriately-named Awesome Arts Festival – which has a huge range of events and workshops planned for the holidays – the show is free and suitable for all ages.
Performances are 11am daily from 28 September to 2 October. For more info, check out the Awesome Arts Festival programme here.
SUPERHERO SECRET MISSION TRAIL, Fremantle
Assemble your little heroes, as for five days the streets of Fremantle will be transformed into an all-action treasure hunt. With inflatable obstacles at some of the city’s most iconic locations, and secret codewords to be unscrambled along the way, they can climb, jump and solve their way to winning a comic-book-themed prize.
The trail runs from 5 to 9 October, and is free but ticketed. Suitable for ages 2-16. Click here to book your place.
PIZZA MAKING WORKSHOP, The Marina Mindarie
Who doesn’t like pizza? Great to eat, but even better to make (and then eat, of course). The Indian Ocean Brewing Co are celebrating all things doughy in this pizza-making class for kids. From kneading, designing, baking and eating, they’ll see every step of the process – making this a fantastic morning for any young chef.
The workshop runs from 11:15am-12:15pm, 30th September and 7th October. Tickets are $10 and are available here.
REPTILE DISPLAY, Kardinya Park Shopping Centre
If you’ve ever fancied getting up close and personal with a snake or lizard, now’s your chance! Learn about your favourite scaly creatures at this eye-opening, hands-on display for reptile-lovers of all ages.
The exhibit is open from 11am-2pm, 5 to 9 October. For more info, take a look at the Facebook event.
JUMP-A-ROUND OBSTACLE COURSE, Maddington
Feeling adventurous? These Perth September school holidays are getting messy!
Head over to Harmony Fields in the second week of holidays to take on the longest inflatable obstacle course Perth has ever seen, packed with inflatable challenges, waterslides, foam tunnels, messy play and more. Suitable for ages 3+ and all fitness levels, this is an adrenaline-packed outing for all the family.
Takes place from 10am-3pm, 7 to 11 October. Tickets are just $5.65 per person, and are available here.
FREEDOM FAIRIES, Watertown
For the next two weeks, the Fairy Queen and her fairy friends are making West Perth’s Watertown their home. Offering face painting and different craft activities each week, why not sprinkle a little magic over your holidays?
The fairies will appear from 11am-2pm daily, 26 September to 9 October. For more info, click here.
CHICK HATCHING, Freo Toy Library
Nothing says spring like the cheeping of little chicks. Since 15th September, Freo Toy Library have been hatching their own and inviting children to take a look. Pop in to see them in the flesh (or fluff).
The library is open from 28 September to 2 October (not 30th), and times vary. For more info, visit their website.
BIRD-MAKING WORKSHOP, Art Gallery Of Western Australia
Finally, for your older ones, contemporary dance company Co:3 and AGWA have teamed up to offer this unique textiles workshop where they’ll learn how to turn an old item of black clothing into a bird. The creations will then be collected together and used as the set for a new production by the company in 2021, making this an experience they won’t forget.
The workshop runs from 10am-4pm on 8th October, and is for ages 10+. Tickets are free, but booking is required. Click here to book your space.
