A slice of paradise found in East Vic Park

Tucked away in the industrial area of East Vic Park is a serene hidden oasis called Active Wellness Spa. AWS specialises in 2 luxurious and unique treatments- the Wellness Pod and the Bodyroll. Both are designed to destress, realign and detoxify your body.

As soon as you step into the space, you are transported to a bright, beachy paradise. The space is small, but packs a rich gold and turquoise punch! Calming meditation music and fragrant incense caress the corridors. Your senses will instantly pull your brain back to the last time you experienced bliss.

Hot tip: arrive early so you can get some Insta-worthy photos!

Self-love and self-care is central to AWS’s wellness philosophy. If you’re lucky, you’ll be greeted by the warm and vivacious owner, Maitri. You are under her care from the start to finish and her effervescent, nurturing energy alone is enough to lift the grumpiest of grumpy moods. After making sure I was adequately hydrated with a glass of cool water, Maitri whisked me off to my first wellness pod session.

What is a Wellness Pod?

Wellness Pods feature full spectrum infrared therapy (near, mid and far rays) along with red light LED therapy. Tourmaline, Jade and Germanium stones neatly line the lid. When energized, they emit radiant waves which enhance the healing atmosphere in the pod. The pod is cushioned and it vibrates, giving your body an all over massage.

Who needs it? Well, the benefits include:

  • De-stress & Detox
  • Burn calories and reduce cellulite
  • Reduce inflammation & Body pain
  • Weight Management
  • Pain Management
  • Pre/Post Workout
  • Sore Muscle & Joint Relief
  • Better Sleep &  More Flexibility
  • Mental Clarity & Focus
  • Increased Blood Circulation & Oxygen level
  • Increased metabolism & Supple Joints
  • Anti aging & Rejuvenates Skin

What does it feel like?

Imagine lying in your own tiny personal sauna. On my first session, I gleefully told Maitri that I love the heat, so she dialled up the settings to the most intense heat level (up to 76 degrees!). Within 15 minutes I became painfully aware of my misstep. The pod heat is dry, which, in my opinion, makes the heat much more intense than any sauna. Infrared rays heat your body from the core and I could feel the heat penetrating my viscera. Normally, I can do a full HIIT workout and not produce a drop of sweat. 20 minutes into my treatment and I was dripping! Ultimately, the heat was too much for me. Thankfully, all the settings are completely adjustable, so I dialled down the heat a notch. Maybe I’m not as cold-blooded as I thought!

You are treated to complimentary rose facial mist and a glass of cool coconut water following a pod session. The exceptional service at AWS makes you feel very special indeed!

I tried out the Intro to Wellness package which includes 3 Wellness Pod treatments. I waited several days in between sessions. I learnt from my mistake, and started the second and third sessions on the second highest heat setting which proved to be much more enjoyable. I found myself relaxing into a meditative state, my senses lulled into paradise by the hum of the pod.

How long does it take to see results?

It is recommended that you do 12 pod sessions over 6 weeks for lasting results. To get your body detoxifying at a deeper cellular level, 17+ sessions are recommended.

To my surprise, I found that my poor circulation improved. My body warms up faster and I’m even managing to break a sweat when I exercise, which is fantastic! Sweat is your body’s natural way of detoxing and I always wondered about my lack of sweat and the buildup of toxins in my system. I’m curious as to how long these changes will last. I didn’t notice any changes in the way my body looked, but I didn’t expect this with only 3 sessions.

Bodyroll machines combine the healing interaction of slimming and lymphatic massage to stimulate the lymphs. They help to remove toxins from the body, improve your metabolism and break down cellulite. There are infrared lights inside the roller which help to warm the body and aid the detoxification process. It’s like a massage on steroids!

This is an active massage. No falling asleep here! The machine spins whilst it guides you through a series of positions for a full body massage. Feet, inner thighs, triceps, back- no body part is neglected! Maitree told me that the experience can be very intense and painful for some people, especially those who have tight and dysfunctional muscles. I actually found the massage to be incredibly fun and enjoyable. The roller felt amazing on every part of my body except for my calves- they hurt like crazy! After half an hour, I walked out feeling like a nicely tenderised steak.

My entire body was mildly sore for a couple of days following the bodyroll. It felt like I’d done a new workout, and it was an incredibly satisfying feeling, especially considering the brevity of the session.

Active Wellness Spa is a real gem. Not only are their treatments effective, and the space stunning, it has a real soul thanks to Maitri and her nurturing energy and service. It permeates the entire building and you leave feeling like you’ve had the longest, warmest hug. Both treatments had a significant effect on my body, but I liked the bodyroll better because the aftereffects were more tangible. As someone who has generally low stress levels, I enjoyed the concept of an active massage!
